Introduction

We were observing the news the other day and the statistic that was pulsating on the television screen was nothing less than scary. It mentioned 66% of boys and girls in American grade eight classes couldn’t carry out math. 66%! Just after I let the current information “sink in”, I started to ask myself questions such as “how come is this taking place”, then the stronger question, “just what exactly should most people possibly do about it”? I have thought about these things before, but it seems that the answer, one turning all over mathematics comic strips, is more fundamental now than it has ever been.

With the turn of the century, we’re turning out to be a lot more a global economy. Children no more compete with the little one in the desk alongside them, but with the youngster in a class on the other side of the world.
